If you need a good cry

30 Apr

Read this book, if you haven’t already. “My Sister’s Keeper,” by Jodi Picoult is a fantastic novel about a family dealing with childhood leukemia. I read it about four years ago while studying abroad and pretty much sobbed the enitre flight to Italy one weekend. The other passengers probably thought I was having a nervous breakdown or something. Anyway I just saw that they’ve made it into a movie, and of course the trailer had me in a puddle of tears. Plus, it’s from the same guy who directed “The Notebook.” Clearly every woman in the theatre will be dehydrated by the time the credits roll. It looks great, minus the awful miscasting of Cameron Diaz as the mom. Seriously? Gah. Check it out here.

My week’s picks for flicks and tunes

22 Apr

I promise I’ll write a real-life blog soon, one that doesn’t have to do with American Idol or Sex and the City (just for you, MWM). But until then… check out these new movie trailers that I’m VERY excited about.

Moon: Looks very much like a modern take on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Could be really awesome, could be lame. But I’m looking forward to it.

Moon

The Stoning of Soraya M.: This looks positively fantastic. I love Jim Caviezel (barely recognized him at first), and I love the woman who it appears plays the lead. I’ve seen her in other things and although I don’t know who she is, I love her voice. It’s captivating.

Extract: This pick is a little self-indulgent, but I have a huge, ginormous megacrush on Jason Bateman. Adorable. Plus, Kristen Wiig cracks me up, and Ben Affleck with long curly hair? Eww.

More here.

And, if you’re interested… two girly pop songs I can’t get out of my head:

Kelly Clarkson, “I Do Not Hook Up” I’m pretty sure KC can do no wrong. I heard this song once and immediately rushed to download it, learned all the lyrics and played it on my iPod about 135 times in a row. Sorry, neighbors. And in case you didn’t know: “OH NO/I do not hook UP, UP/I fall deep.”

Beyonce, “Diva” Crank up the volume and blast this lady-power song in the car while driving six hours roundtrip to your future city of employment for the third time in a week. “Diva is a female version of a hustler” and don’t you forget it.
